DRC: After a Day in Detention, Opposition Figure Seth Kikuni Released

On October 18, 2025, Congolese opposition leader Seth Kikuni, a member of the movement Sauvons la RDC, was arrested upon his return from Nairobi, where he had attended an opposition conclave organized by former President Joseph Kabila, who was recently sentenced to death by a Congolese military court for treason.

Hours after his arrest, several voices, including Sauvons la RDC, demanded clarification. The movement issued a press release calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the entrepreneur and politician.

Late that evening, security services released him without any explanation or official statement. The information was confirmed by Kikuni himself, who said he had been locked in an underground cell without light or ventilation before being brought up for questioning.

“After one day in the hands of the National Intelligence Agency, where I was arbitrarily detained in an underground cell with no light or space before being questioned, I am finally FREE,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

He added:

“My phones and several personal belongings remain confiscated. I fear they might be used to fabricate evidence against me and destroy my reputation.”

Seth Kikuni expressed gratitude to all individuals and organizations who pressured the authorities for his release, saying that without them, he might still be detained.
He concluded that tyranny and dictatorship will eventually end, declaring:

“No one has the right to steal the democracy that Congo has fought for so long.”
