Lubumbashi: Over 40,000 People Gather at City of Refuge Church for Holy Communion

A major spiritual event was held at City of Refuge Church in the city of Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo, on January 4, 2026, during the celebration of the Holy Communion.

The same event was organized simultaneously across the country and beyond national borders, including Burundi, Uganda, Congo-Brazzaville, Angola, and several other countries where City of Refuge Church operates, under the leadership of its founder, Prophet Mulindwa Jules.

In Lubumbashi, however, the gathering stood out for its unprecedented scale. For the first time in 2026, believers from all ten City of Refuge branches in the city came together in one place to partake in the Lord’s Supper.

According to Apostle Jack Caleb Lukengerwa, the main apostle in Lubumbashi and the prophet’s representative in the region, the turnout exceeded expectations:

“We prepared as many chairs as possible, but many people were unable to find seats. Based on the number of chairs we had prepared, we estimate the attendance to be between 40,000 and 45,000 people,” he said.

The event took place at Kamaramba Stadium, one of the largest venues in Lubumbashi. The stadium was chosen because the church’s usual worship spaces could not accommodate such a massive crowd. At City of Refuge Church, the Holy Communion is not limited to church members; it is also open to anyone seeking healing, deliverance, or solutions to personal challenges.

The gathering was marked by powerful moments of worship, prayer, and deliverance during the sharing of the Holy Communion.

Unlike practices in some other religious traditions, the Lord’s Supper at City of Refuge Church is celebrated as a moment of eating and drinking together.

“For the meal, we served donuts and a drink. Through the powerful prayer offered by the prophet, the meal was transformed into the flesh and blood of Christ; an extraordinary moment during which many people testified to experiencing miracles,” explained Apostle Jack Caleb Lukengerwa.

People from various boroughs of Lubumbashi and from different religious backgrounds came together in a strong display of unity, drawn by the welcoming atmosphere of City of Refuge Lubumbashi.

Although it is one of the newest branches of City of Refuge Church in the Democratic Republic of Congo, City of Refuge Lubumbashi has already attracted large numbers of followers from across the city, thanks to its teachings, testimonies of miracles, and deliverance services. Today, it stands as one of the largest City of Refuge branches in the country.
